Tary

Ashley Tary, O.D.

President 2023-2024

Dr. Ashley Tary was born and raised in the St. Louis area. She has practiced at Rosen Optometry in South St. Louis County for the last 8 years. When she decided to pursue her passion for optometry, she chose to attend the University of Missouri-St. Louis where she enrolled in the 3+4 accelerated program. She graduated in 2014 with honors. Dr. Tary is currently a member of the American Optometric Association, Missouri Optometric Association, and St. Louis Optometric Society.

Currently, Dr. Tary resides in House Springs with her husband and high school sweetheart Chris. They have two young daughters Avery and Morgan. Together, they enjoy spending weekends camping and swimming.

Schafers

Allison Schafers, O.D.

President Elect

Dr. Schafers graduated from the University of Missouri-St. Louis College of Optometry. She completed her residency training in primary care/ocular disease at the St. Louis VA Medical Center and remains on staff there. She is currently the residency coordinator at the St. Louis VA and serves as adjunct faculty at UMSL College of Optometry. Dr. Schafers is a Fellow in the American Academy of Optometry and board certified in the American College of Medical Optometry. She is a member of the American Optometric Association, Missouri Optometric Association, and the Armed Forces Optometric Association. She also serves as a consultant for the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education. 

Dr. Schafers is a St. Louis native and in her free time enjoys visiting national parks and hiking with her husband Matt.

Polk

Eric Polk

Vice President

Dr. Eric Polk is a 1994 graduate of University of Missouri-St. Louis College of Optometry. He is the clinical director of Washington University LASIK Surgery Center in St. Louis, Missouri. He works as a research study coordinator for Refractive Surgery Specialists and has participated in clinical trials for new laser technology.

Dr. Polk is a past board member and President of the St. Louis Optometric Society. He is pleased to be back serving as Vice President which is reserved for past presidents to help guide the current board of directors.

Dowdy

George Dowdy, O.D.

Secretary

Dr. George Dowdy serves patients at Optical Expressions in Creve Coeur and Clayton. He treats patients of all ages and enjoys teaching them to better understand their eyes. He completed his doctoral training at the University of Missouri-St. Louis College of Optometry in 2020. On rotation, Dr. Dowdy has served patients at Saint Louis University Hospital, Affinia Healthcare in St. Louis, Chickasaw Nation Medical Center in Ada, Oklahoma, and Norton Sound Regional Hospital in Nome, Alaska. In addition to the St. Louis Optometric Society, Dr. Dowdy is an active member of the Missouri Optometric Association and the American Optometric Association. A St. Louis native, Dr. Dowdy graduated from John F. Kennedy High School. He received his biology degree and competed on the swim team at Truman State University.

Dr. Dowdy currently resides in Chesterfield with his wife Julia and their Siberian husky. They are expecting their first child in the fall of 2023. He enjoys the outdoors and roots for our hometown St. Louis Cardinals, Blues, and Billikens.

Nabhan

Tareq Nabhan, O.D.

Treasurer

Dr. Tareq Nabhan is an optometrist with teaching, research, and entrepreneurial experience in hardware-software telehealth solutions seeking to democratize eye care via more portable and affordable solutions. He is a faculty member in the College of Optometry at the University of Missouri – St. Louis (UMSL) and developed the college’s first-ever Telehealth course. He is also lead attending optometrist at Affinia Healthcare and led the development, implementation, and execution of teleretina services in primary care. Dr. Nabhan also serves as a Special Government Employee for CMS MEDCAC and on multiple clinical advisory panels to global eye care nonprofit organizations. 

He joined the St. Louis Optometric Society as a board member in 2022. Dr. Nabhan has been awarded the UMSL Optometric Educator of the Year Award in 2017 and 2023.

Merriman

Rachel Merriman, O.D.

Sergeant At Arms

Dr. Merriman is a native of St. Charles. She graduated from St. Charles West High School and then stayed in the St. Louis area and attended and graduated from Missouri Baptist University.

Dr. Merriman is a 2007 graduate of the University of Missouri St. Louis College of Optometry. She joined the team at Bogey Hills Vision Center in 2009. One of her passions is treating and providing pediatric vision care.

Castellano

Nicholas Castellano, O.D.

Immediate Past President

Dr. Nicholas Castellano received his undergraduate degree from the
University of Missouri-Columbia in 2012 before receiving his Doctor of
Optometry from the University of Missouri-St. Louis College of Optometry.
Dr. Castellano holds DPA and TPA certification and is licensed to treat
visual and medical conditions of the eye. He is a member of the St. Louis
Optometric Society, the Missouri Optometric Association, the American
Optometric Association and the American Academy of Optometry. In addition, he is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry.

In his free time Dr. Castellano enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife
and two children. Growing up in the area, he is a fan of all things Saint
Louis. When not with his family you may find Dr. Nick golfing with friends
and colleagues.

Goerrs

Robert Goerss, O.D.

MOA Trustee

Dr. Robert Goerss graduated from the University of Missouri St. Louis College of Optometry in 2001. practice. He is the owner of Tomasino, Goerss Vision Source, a multi doctor practice located in O’Fallon, MO. Clinical experience includes rotations at both the John Cochran and Jefferson Barracks VA hospitals, assisting with the eyecare needs of the St. Louis Rams and St. Louis Blues, and developing skills in fitting specialty contact lenses and focusing on the latest technology in the treatment of ocular disease with a particular interest in the management of dry eye disease. He is a Past-President of the St. Louis Optometric Society. He currently serves as one of two trustees to the Missouri Optometric Association and is an active member of the American Optometric Association. In 2004 he was presented with the Young Optometrist Of The Year Award by the Missouri Optometric Association, and the Optometrist of the Year Award by the St. Louis Optometric Society in 2011. 

He resides in St. Charles, MO with his wife and two daughters.

Renee Lane

Renee Lane, O.D.

Trustee to the State Board

Dr. Renee Lane graduated from UMSL College of Optometry in 2012. She currently works as an associate OD in the DeSoto Walmart Vision Center. Renee has been an active member in St. Louis Optometric Society and the Missouri Optometric Association since optometry school. Renee has served in leadership positions while in school and since graduation.

She resides with her  family in Lonedell, Missouri where they have started to raise club calves for her children to exhibit in local livestock shows. Her two sons, Logan and Levi, are active in FFA.  Her daughter, Rylee, is just active in everything right which keeps Renee on her toes and very busy!

Huff

Paula Huff

Executive Director

Paula Huff has a unique business background that helps her fulfill multiple roles for the St. Louis Optometric Society. She has been involved in Optometry for over 40 years. Her husband had a private practice in St. Louis and she was active in handling the business side of that practice which allowed her to develop many great relationships in the Optometric field.

She has a business background and her friendships and relationships in the industry have proven to be invaluable! She especially enjoys working with this younger generation of doctors participating and serving in Leadership Roles with the St. Louis Optometric Society.

Paula’s personal passion is traveling with her daughters.
